Coach Town is entering his 20th
campaign as the head baseball coach for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Colleges. During his tenure the Stags have captured two league championships, each time making postseason appearances. His baseball philosophy encompasses the belief that sound hitting fundamentals, strong pitching, and great defense will win ball games. Coach Town is a past chairman of the All-American selection committee and the NCAA Division III National Committee. Coach Town was recognized by a vote of his peers as the 1996 West Region Coach of the Year for guiding the Stags to their third postseason appearance during his tenure.
Town was a professional pitcher (1978-81) and coach (1984 and 1985) with the Cincinnati Reds organization. He also served as head coach of four youth teams playing at the international level. He was an assistant coach for Stanislaus State prior to coming to Claremont. While he was attending Stanislaus, he was a member of the 1977 NCAA Division III National Championship team.
In addition to his role as head baseball coach, Town is an assistant professor of physical education and director of physical education. His teaching activities include golf, jogging, weight training, racquetball, and tennis. Town lives in Claremont with his wife, Mary, and their three girls: Allison, Anna, and Elizabeth.
